Manitoba is a province in western Canada, located in the prairie region, bordered on the west by Saskatchewan, on the east by Ontario, on the north by Nunavut and on the south by the US states of Minnesota and North Dakota. With an estimated population of 1,208,268 in 2011 and an area of 647,801 km², Manitoba is the 5th most populous province and the 8th largest in the Federation. The name of the province comes from a Cree word meaning “passage of the Great Spirit”. Winnipeg is its capital as well as its most populous city. Travelers arrived in the region at the end of the 17th century, but the area was not part of the colony of New France. On May 2, 1670, northern Manitoba, part of Rupert's Land, was granted by King Charles II of England to the Hudson's Bay Company, which sold it to Canada in 1870.
